ELDERS COUNCIL

The Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN) Convention Act Section 29 provides for the establishment of an Elders Council. On October 22, 2008, at a duly convened meeting, the SICC Board of Governors and FSIN representatives agreed to transfer responsibility for the Elders Council to the SICC and has been confirmed by the FSIN Executive. Section 30 of the FSIN Convention Act provides that the Elders Council responsibilities are detailed in a protocol. The SICC has drafted a protocol for the Elders Council. That protocol was reviewed by the SICC Board of Governors and the SICC Elders Council.

The SICC Elders Council is comprised of one representative from each of the eight First Nations language groups in Saskatchewan: Plains Cree, Swampy Cree, Woodland Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Dakota, Nakoda and Lakota. The Elders Council meets seasonally to provide advice and guidance to the FSIN and the SICC.
